War, crime, homeless, suicide, and domestic violence is a topic we hear everyday in the news. One thing is for sure we never bother to investigate what the true problem is. Depression is one of the main causes, 1 in 33 children might have depression but in teens those numbers can be as high as 1 in 8 (kidshealth.org/parents/emotion/feeling/understanding-depression. Mental illness is a problem in society that has affected many. I believe mental illness is the main cause of hateful crime, war, homeless, suicide and domestic violence. Therefore society should pay more attention. Depression can lead to suicide and domestic violence and other problems.(http://kidshealth.org/teen/your_mind/mental_health/suicide.html)
Teen depression is a topic we don’t hear everyday, does that mean it is not important? As a matter affected it is. Teen depression is a mood disorder that happens mostly to teens. Some people don’t even know and would really never find out that they have fallen slowly into depression. Sadly since this happens during middle and high school we do not even know they have depression until it’s to late meaning that they have committed suicide. The numbers are high: 90% of 34,000 that commit suicide have depression.(kidshealth.org/parents/emotion/feeling/understanding-depression)
I searched if LAUSD(Los Angeles Unified School District) had a program to train teachers about teen depression but nothing pops-up now. Their could be a program but it isn’t easy tolocate. Maybe they don’t think it’s important? A Biology teacher, Bernie Terry says, “They weren't my student but we were close he came in and told me he taught about suicide” I ask him so what you do, Mr. Terry responded, “I seeked help with the counselor... LAUSD doesn't have a program that trains teachers about this topic... they use to have a program but it's not advertised no more. Not a lot of teachers know it exist.” Why doesn't LAUSD have a program to train teachers? Maybe because the just don't find it worth it, maybe because they haven't experienced it.
Thankfully, there is a cure but sometimes not a lot of people get saved. One reason is we don't know what the symptoms are. They’re different steps as it develops, first they will feel helpless and hopeless soon they will start to loose interest on thing they loved to do, that leads to lack of energy. For men, they will have anxiety and start blaming people. In woman they will hide their true mood. After you will start to notice that they’re either loosing or gaining weight because the victim can loose or gain interest in eating. The most common symptom is mood swings. The last one is looking at death thought of suicide. (http://www.healthline.com/health/depression.) The treatments are psychotherapy but now the have antidepressant but they can't all be good according to the book The History of Depression by Kenneth Mclntosh “Critics insist antidepressant medications do little to help patients and may actually cause harm.” (The History of Depression). Another cure is electroshock therapy which is a shock to the nervous systems. Yes, we do have treatments but why is it that we see many reports on teen suicide.
Depression is an important issue to be aware because it is the main cause of suicide and family problems. We as a community should be aware of teen changes because we want to cut down on problems we face in the world, no parent likes to see their kid jump off a building. If you have any questions don't be afraid to search, here is a good website www.couns.uiuc.edu/Brochure/depress.htm. If you have a friend, family or some one you know don't be afraid to call the National Suicide Privation Lifeline at this toll free number at 1-800-273-8255 they help people over come thought of suicide they will help your friend solve her problem hopefully you would be taking action.
