It is estimated that there are currently about 18 million people worldwide with Alzheimer’s disease (http://www.searo.who.int/en/section1174/section1199/ection1567_6740.htm). Alzheimer is a serious mental disease that needs a lot of attention.. Alzheimer’s disease is often diagnosed in the mild or early stage when it becomes clear to the family and the doctors that a person is having a significant trouble with memory and thinking. There are a lot of people that have no clue what this is and it’s affects us all. People with Alzheimer could live for about 20 years (http://ehow.com). Alzheimer is a type of dementia that attacks the brain slowly and unfortunately, not everybody is paying much attention to a serious disease and we have to find a treatment or a cure.
Alzheimer’s is a big situation for the family and it’s difficult for them to see him like that. Unfortunately, someone got to see her father suffering from Alzheimer and she described he was like a statue trying to remember. Her name is Maria Lopez. She remember she saw her father do strange things he never done before and Alzheimer affects the every day life. “He became alone on his own not knowing what to do and after few years he died”, (Lopez)she said in a sad tone. Slowly, he started forgetting some things he would always do and step by step he started forgetting who his family was and sometimes he would ask to himself if he even had a family. Everyone should be paying attention on what’s going on around them. The same situation that happen to her old father can happen to anyone else. This illness affects everyone because people in the family becomes depressed and it affects society too because the national huge cost of Alzheimer’s disease was $183 billion in 2011 (http://www.ahaf.org/alzheimers/about/understanding /facts/html). Anyone over the age of 65 sadly have the possibility of getting Alzheimer and one of those people could be you in the future.
Luckily, doctors have taken their wisely time thinking about others creating treatments, and therapies. Making sure that the people gets the help that they need. According to namenda.com, there are two types of treatments used to manage Alzheimer’s disease. Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors is one of them and it work by helping to increase the amount of acetylcholine in the brain, a chemical that is important for memory and learning. Glutamate pathway modifiers is another that work differently than the acetylcholine inhibitors. Glutamate is another chemical in the brain that is important for learning and memory(namenda.com ). At least these are some solutions the doctors had come up with.
Maria’s good happily father got some treatments that could help him a little bit but not enough. “Doctors could have done something to help him out before he got worse but they were ignorant, she said in an angry voice. It made her family mad because the doctors didn’t didn’t cared much about him. If one of your family member had Alzheimer and the doctors ignore him saying it’s hopeless, how would you feel? Angry because he didn’t received the attention he needed and the doctors weren’t doing their job like they were suppose to.
That is why we should do something to help out others in need. Our society has to pay a lot of money and maybe we, the people, should donate to a person with Alzheimer or to an organization. The doctors could at least treat them with treatments so they could help them out with the phases they’re going to. Some treatments may be to expensive and you might not have enough money. There will be a day when one of your family member suffers from Alzheimer and they will need all the help they need. That is why it is important to donate at least ten cents to an organization like the national Alzheimer Association, Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, Alzheimer’s Family Organization and others more(http://www.alzfdn.org/ContributetoAFA/makeadonation.html). A small thing can make a big difference. Some people may be thinking that it is not important, but it can happen to anyone, including yourself later on in the future. I care about this situation because I don’t want others to go through the same situation like my grandfather. Sadly, most of the people with Alzheimer live with a forgotten life and you wouldn’t like to live like that. It’s time we help others out and in the future someone will help you out.
