Post trauma stress disorder or P.T.S.D is a serious mental illness that develops over time, although is a serious illness is not really common among people. People who develop this illness were either in war, near death situations, child abuse or being diagnosed of a life threatening disease [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posttraumatic_stress_disorder#cite note-DSM4-0] or very rarely it is inhered it from someone who has P.T.S.D [http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8466386]. This illness not only affects you mentally but could also affect you economically, socially, and could lead to hurting your loved once. Therefore, living with P.T.S.D can be very challenging the affects can stay around for days, weeks, months or even years!! Although this mental illness has been around since mans first recording of war no cure has been found.
In a recent interview I had with my uncle, Fernando he explained to us how he feels about this topic. My uncle served in Iraq and Afghanistan for 3 years. In those 3 years he witnessed the horrors of war. Marked by this horrific memories was born a mental sickness within his head... “Even after I was out of that s***hole, I still heard the screams, I had sleepless nights and I couldn’t control my anger”. He was a victim of a roadside bomb and ambush. The next few days he couldn’t sleep, eat and he would get very agitated easily. Even a few months after the ambush he was still having constant sleepless nights he would wet the bed and have mood swings.
P.T.S.D has a very low rate of affecting people, only 8 percent are affected. 50 to 90 percent of people get another different type of mental [http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11068961.]. Unlike other illnesses post trauma can be inhered it. If you were a son of a Vietnam veteran your most likely to get it yourself unbelievable but true. When you have this mental illness your brain isn’t quite normal 3 parts of your brain are damaged and send out many random reactions to things. In a recent research, 70 percent of people with P.T.S.D are either homeless, jobless and have problems socializing the other 30 percent are the once that seeked help by neurologist, psychiatrist or simply just tried there forget. P.T.S.D not only affects you but your loved once, not only emotionally but economically. “It is very hard to get a job now a days, but since I have P.T.S.D is practically impossible!” says my uncle.
“Our job was to patrol the outside parameter of a roadside bomb that happened earlier that week, our captain guaranteed us that nothing can go wrong on a patrol mission. He was wrong. Bam! in less than a minute 8 out of 22 of us weren’t so lucky and 4 were wounded” when my uncle mentioned this he shed a couple of tears, which were familiar to his family and me. “The worst part of this real nightmare is that I can no longer be normal in society I am traumatized and loud things bring me memories, not only that but I cant put my son through college because I cant get a job those are the horrors of war” my uncle has gotten help from many doctors and and psychiatrist. So far he has improved a lot and now he has a little peace of mind. He now is trying to find a job, but so far no luck.
As u can see, many people are affected by this mental illness not just my uncle. Many times is hard for people to get cured and psychiatrist. So far he has improved a lot and now he has a little peace of mind. He now is trying to find a job, but so far no luck.do to the fact that they have no economical support or they can’t afford a good psychiatrist. Sometimes, help might come a little to late. Places like PCH treatment centers help people with this illness. The government also provides treatment for veterans fresh out of the war zone. This problem is worldwide and not only affects them but people close around them, would you like to be affected by this problem? Take action visit www.ptsd.va.gov/.
